They say curiosity kills the cat but we say, overhype almost killed our Kat (tappa)!!!! Understandably, BAHUBALI 2 is our homage to why, where and how Kattappa killed Bahubali (senior)…period.

The epic blockbuster of 2015, BAHUBALI that created history at the ticket windows comes back with an even mightier and grander BAHUBALI 2, dubbed as mother-of-all-VFX-films (by Indian standards, I mean).

By re-releasing BAHUBALI last week, the makers made sure that you are not just aware of the past story but are also panting, starving and dying to watch BAHUBALI 2. And fair enough, the film rises to our expectations but may not be reaching the pinnacle in any way, losing its grasp somewhere in between.

Nevertheless, the film is a brave attempt by makers S. S. Rajmouli to wean off Indian audiences from the Hollywood Sci-Fi biggies who primarily rule the world of mind-blowing special effects.

If film-watching is all about floating in the dreamland for 3 hours than nothing is better than loosing yourself into the magical world of BAHUBALI 2. The sheer magnanimity of this visual extravaganza makes it for a compulsive watch.

Like the original, BAHUBALI 2 is also woven around a single line, good triumphs over evil in the end. It is a ‘Chandamama’ story told in ‘BENHUR’ style. But kudos to S. S. Rajmouli for widening our imagination and pupil of our eyes in never-before ways. The humongous scale of the canvas almost dwarfs our 5 senses. Like Alice –in-wonderland, one marvels at the jaw-dropping special effects and heart-stopping fights. Mayanagari Mahishmati is unreal yet strikingly beautiful with golden chariots, flying horses, mighty mountains, marble palaces, cascading waterfall , blue lagoons, pretty maidens and chirping birds…..blissfull.

Amarendra Bahubali (Prabhas) and Bhallala ( Rana Daggubati) are cousins fighting for the throne. According to the Queen Mother (Ramya), Bhallala is the biological heir to the throne but she favours Amarendra, the rightful heir to the throne. So Bhallala decides to fight with his ugly father and the trusted lieutenant, Kattappa on his side while Amarendra takes on with Janata’s love and Queen mother, Shivagami’s faith on his side. Who wins is a no-brainer…sigh !!!!.

In the nutshell, BAHUBALI 2 is a prequel to BAHUBALI, made only to solve the agonising query, Why Kattappa killed Bahubali ??? only to get a lame-duck answer…..seriously, the hoopla and the frenzy around IT seemed unreasonable.

Still this drama moves with speed of a bullet train, not giving you a single second to breathe. Ear splitting sound effects can almost deliver a pre-term baby in the stands…..in the last one hour, you will witness a hilarious fusion of TROY, THOR, AVENGERS, MUMMY and MATRIX special effects in a mind-numbing way. Film’s constant engagement with high-bass background score can make you stone-deaf by the end of 3 hours. Unfortunately, it relies heavily on over-expression….emotions are felt only in extremes…one is found either hugging or killing , screaming or laughing,,,nothing in-between !!!! leftover steam is lost in uneven dubbing into Hindi….God bless these disturbed souls…..

But some things are just oh-so-perfect, like Prabhas, enacting the dual role of senior and junior Bahubali is the true hero of the series. Ladies, hold your horses, going one step ahead, Prabhas appears more royal, more regal, strong and more charismatic. His mythical character wearing dhoti and wielding bow and arrow steals the show….

Anushka Shetty, the love interest is a warrior princess, ready to sing, dance and fight with equal panache. Just like original Tamannah, she is delicate damsel inside an iron sheath sharing shoulder with her man in war and peace….Bravo.

Rana Daggubati as mean prince is deadlier and nastier. His heavy body frame suits the epic character. But evil Bhallala is menacingly repetitive. He raves, he rants, he huffs, he puffs but fails to scare us enough….pity!!
Save the other caricatures for being straight out of ‘Amar Chitra Katha’… Ramya, the queen mother talks with her eyes only……. blood-shot eyeballs almost popping out of their sockets with every emotion whether happy, sad or plain irritated.

Honestly, BAHUBALI 2 is made with ‘Bada- hai-toh- behter- hai’ concept that just magnifies and multiplies been-there-seen-that ideas into 200 times bigger but what the heck, watching BAHUBALI 2 is a national craze, so skipping it is not an option….join the queue, ASAP 😉
