A.R. Rahman Jai Ho- Don't you get tired belting out great music?
Unarguably, one of the greatest composers in the modern world

The cool dude of Indian film music, A.R. Rahman

We thought that with the passing away of the legendary RD Burman, Hindi film music would lose its melody and soul. But, we were proven wrong.

Rahman, just in his mid-20s burst into the scene with his haunting Roza numbers. Things have never been the same since.

Watch this number from Roza and relive the magic of A.R. Rahman.

We call him a cool dude. Even after spending nearly quarter of a century belting out great numbers, Rahman still sounds contemporary.

He was a sensation among the college goers of the mid 90s. And even now he enthralls his teenage audiences.

A.R. Rahman-The Mozart of Madras

Back home in Chennai, A.R. Rahman is called The Mozart of Madras by his fans. While others term him Isai Puyal which in English means, The Musical Storm.

Awards Galore

This music genius from Chennai boasts of 2 Academy Awards, 2 Grammies, 1 BAFTA Award and 15 Filmfare Awards.

A.R. Rahman’s cabinet also holds 4 National Awards, a Golden Globe Award and a Padma Shri.

Whoa, that’s a lot of awards for a person who is in his mid 40s!

Born For Music

Rahman was born in a music family. His father, Shekhar was a composer for Tamil and Malayalam movie songs. This helped Rahman appreciate the nuances of music.

Unfortunately for A.R. Rahman, his father passed away quite early. Nevertheless, this tragedy did not dim Rahman’s passion for music.

He got his first movie  break when Mani Rathnam signed him for Roza, initially made in Tamil. But, so great was the appeal of this film’s plot that it had to be dubbed in Hindi as well. Roza ensured that A.R. Rahman had finally arrived in the world of Bollywood as well.

Not prolific but everlasting

In the Hindi film industry, Rahman has not been as prolific a composer as RD Burman. Rahman’s filmography includes such super hits like Bombay, Dil Se, Rangeela, Taal, Lagaaan and Rockstar.

Watch this video from Rangeela, which marked Rahman’s Hindi debut.

The movies are few but each of  his songs are everlasting. One is always left wondering at his ease in weaving his compositions around actors as diverse as Urmila Matondkar, Aamir Khan, Shahrukh and lately, the duo of Aditya Roy Kapur and Shradha Kapur.

Beyond Awards and Recognition

They say that great artistes are great human beings  as well.

In the case of A. R. Rahman, very few know that this artiste is a great humanitarian as well. He regularly helps out people in distress and his charity work has pulled out several people from the brink of hopelessness.

And, why shouldn’t he? Rahman had seen early in life what losing one’s loved ones means when his loving father passed away very early in life.

We wish A.R. Rahman all the best today, tomorrow and all times to come.
