Though, January 1st continues to be the New Year day for the people worldwide, the 14th April has its own significance in India. Basically, this day marks the 1st day of Hindu solar Calendar. What’s more interesting is the fact that people across the nation celebrate this day as Indian New Year. Since we are known for our unity in diversity such is the beauty of this festival too. Bengalis celebrate it as Naba Varsha while Keralites celebrate it as Vishu. Let’s mingle into the festive spirit today.

Tamil New Year

Also known as Puthandu, the festival is celebrated by Tamils across the globe. Especially, this festival is hugely popular among Tamil populace of Mauritius, Sri-Lanka and Malayasia.

Vishu

The Malayali people or Keralites across the globe celebrate Vishu to mark the first day of Hindu Zodiac calendar. Another legend goes that on this very day Lord Sri Krishna killed Narakasura, the devil.

Baisakhi

This festival marks the fresh harvesting of new winter crop (Rabi), Wheat. Also the day has its paramount importance in Sikh religion. Today, Punjabi people go to gurudwara to pay homage to Sikh gurus and Guru Granth Sahib. With lots Punjabi populace living abroad, the festive has become quite popular in the USA and Canada too.

Bihu

Assamese people celebrate this day as Bohag Bihu signifying the start of Assamese New year. It runs for 7 days and people celebrate it with full festive spirit and gaiety. Bihu folk songs are widely popular during these days.

Poila Boisakh: This day marks the beginning of traditional Hindu New Year in West Bengal. The Hindu bengali populace in Bangladesh celebrate this auspicious day too. It is also called Naba Barsha. People decorate their house with rangolis and colorful drawings on this day. Laxmi-ganesh worship is done on this day to seek blessings from the god for well being of everyone.
