ICC T20 World Cup 2016 is starting today in a rather ignominious style. For the first time ever, the World Cup starts without any formal opening ceremony. According to sources, due to tight schedule of teams with many of them haven’t reached India as yet, there is no opening ceremony for this tournament.

There is no doubt India certainly have an edge over other teams. Former test cricketer Virender Sehwag stated that India, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies are the top contenders to win the championship.

Top Four Contenders for ICC T20 World Cup 2016

India: Dhoni and the team are at their best phase of life. Their consistent performance in limited over internationals for the last few months makes it more certain that India are a team to reckon with.

Recently, India won Asia Cup T20 2016 and also beat Australia 3-0 in a T20 series down under. In fact, India won 9 out of their last 10 T20 clashes which clearly indicate their supremacy in this format. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli & Ashish Nehra are the players to watch out for.

New Zealand: Black Caps are one of the most confident teams especially in the big tournaments. Last year too, New Zealand were runners-up for ICC World Cup 2015 that they lost against Australia in the final.

But this time Kiwis are far more determined and strong under Kane Williamson’s captaincy. Black Caps have won 10 out of their last 17 matches in the last couple of years.

West Indies: The Carribean team is splendid in shorter formats of the game. With big hitters like Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo in the squad, no target is too big for them.

Darren Sammy is an experienced captain and will try everything possible to help his team win the coveted championship. They won 9 out of their last 18 T20Is against tough opponents.

South Africa: Proteas are one of the most disciplined and talented teams in present era. But it seems that victory at big tournaments is a nightmare for them. For record, South Africa didn’t win any editions of the ICC events for the last so many years.

This way or other, the World Cup remains elusive for the Proteas until now despite their brilliant performance. This year, Faf Du Plessis will lead the team from the front. Ab de Villiers, Dale Steyn and Rabada are the players to watch out for. South Africa won 11 out of their last 20 T20Is.
