Over the past decade Facebook has done many technology innovations to have more efficient, easy to use and environmental friendly technology.
Here are the top 10 innovations done by Facebook which they have proudly open sourced for everyone’s use.
Facebook has always used open source tools, be it PHP for website development, Hadoop for analysis and MySQL to store all likes, comments and posts. To distribute data efficiently on low cost servers, Facebook built Open source tool Cassandra, a “NoSQL” database.
3. Hip Hop Virtual Machine
Orginially PHP was used for development. But it was not suitable for such a large platform. So Facebook engineer developed another open source tool Hip Hop Virtual Machine which converts PHP code in machine language. Performance of HHVM was so good that now companies like Box and Wikipedia uses it.
4. Open Air Data Center
Facebook engineers built special data centers in which outside air was used to cool servers. Thus these data centers not only saved lots of money, they are very energy efficient. Facebook didn’t shied in sharing technology blueprint with other companies.
5. Modular Server
Facebook open sourced inventive modular server design in which old stuff like processors which needs to be upgraded can be removed, while you can keep stuff like memory and flash storage. Intel and AMD, the largest chip makers were so impressed with the idea that they got involved in making of modular servers using low-power ARM processors. Apple smartphones also uses similar processors.
6. Networking Gear
Facebook’s engineer designed open source network switches codenamed “Wedge” and “Six-Pack,” which are having simpler design compared to network switch giants Cisco and Juniper, but are much more efficient to run enormous computers needed to run Facebook’s web services.
7. Big Sur, an AI Computer Server
Facebook aiming at accelerating the AI advancement by open sourcing its Artificial Intelligent system code-named Big Sur, open source. Big Sur has many GPUs (Graphic Processing Units) for Deep Learning, a technology involving face recognition and language translation on fly.
During recent F8 developer conference, Facebook unveiled Terragraph, a high bandwidth wi-fi and mobile phone distributor antenna. This is in development stage, and Facebook is still testing the technology. Once ready, Facebook will provide the technology via it’s Telecom Infrastructure Project,
9. Drones and Lasers
This is one of the pet project of the Facebook where lasers and solar powered drones will be used. It will help Two-thirds of the world’s population from Africa, Asia, and Latin America to come online, and connect to rest of the world via Facebook.
10. Facebook Surround360
When it comes to 360-degree video devices, Facebook has built their own tool – the Surround 360. And yes, it’s Open Source too. Company has planned to open source both hardware & software design this summer so that best minds around the world can work on this technology.
