Balance Your Work With Life, Not Life With Your Work!!

“Work is worship”. Agreed but how will you worship if you are not in good being.

You might try to be robotic in nature and stretch your limits by working till wee hours, not catching sleep and working even your body doesn’t permit. But this won’t last for a long run. Your body needs rest and time to relax and rejuvenate itself.

However, you just blindly go on working without thinking about the further consequences. But did you ever realize that even when a machine can exhaust when it overworks, then what will happen to your brain which in spite of having more capability than a machine, it is not mechanical like a machine?

You try to make your brain mechanical. Your sleep timing alters, you find solace merely in working, yet you miss something but what is it. You know what, today this lifestyle seems perfect to you because you consider that you are busy, working and everything is just perfect. But what you don’t realize is that excess of everything is bad.

“Don’t confuse having a career with having a life.”
– Hillary Clinton

Nurture The Relationship, Just Don’t Maintain Them Like Balance Sheet

So just give it a break. I understand the importance of work but try to understand that overwork is not good for your mental and physical health. Apart from leading to depression, insomnia, other stress related problems, your digestive system, kidneys and heart are impacted.

Heather Schuck aptly said,

“You will never be truly satisfied by work until you are satisfied by life.”

Here are few must follow pointers

  • Schedule your work related time.
  • Give your family, personal relationships time.
  • Adopt a hobby. Be it gardening, playing video games, reading, being a flaneur, writing, or whatever you want to.
  • Nurture your hobby. But remember, it’s not a job rather this hobby lets you explore your latent happiness.
  • Do light exercises or yoga.

Life is more than and bigger than success. It is not only about you but about your family and friends as well. So understand the importance of each breath. Don’t worry about work, anyone can replace you in professional sphere but understand that you will leave a void for your family.

As Steve Blank says,

“When you’re gone would you rather have your gravestone say, ‘He never missed a meeting?’ or one that said, ‘He was a great father’.”

So start putting your health, your family, friends over your work. Go out with them. Enjoy. You have a luxury that you have good health, family and friends, don’t take them for granted or as obligations. You might need to schedule yourself for your mental and physical health, but your family and friends need your time. Your presence, be it your happy or sad times, matters to them. Their support and love can replenish you.

Gary Keller correctly said,

“Work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. The other four balls- family, health, friends and integrity- are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it will be irrevocably scuffed, nicked, perhaps even shattered”.
